Mitsubishi Research Institute, Inc. (MRI) [President: Takashi MORISAKI] initiated the "Innovation Network for Co-Creating the Future" (INCF) (https://incf.mri.co.jp/en/) in April 2017 aiming for resolving societal issues through innovation and business. MRI is pleased to announce the publication of the 2018 edition of "Resolving Societal Issues Through Innovation -- Listings of Societal Issues" (English) with various new content.
The first edition, published in September 2017, focused on societal issues stemming from Japan's present situation. In the 2018 listings, we have tried to analyze numerous issues from an international perspective such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and added wider variety of societal issues. The issues can be classified into the following three categories:
  1. Issues that have already been resolved in Japan, and utilizing Japanese technologies can be of help in resolving global issues
    (e.g. high rates of infant mortality);
  2. Issues that also exist in Japan. By becoming the first country to resolve them, Japan can lead the pack on global issues
    (e.g. increasing rates of lifestyle related diseases); and
  3. )Early tackling of global issues will lead to resolving them in Japan in the future
    (e.g. difficulty in protein procurement due to increasingly high global demand).

Also, we have made significant additions to perspectives on resolving complex issues and possible ideas for cross-area solutions. We hope this listing is of use to those interested in resolving societal issues.
