Mitsubishi Research Institute, Inc.

On April 28, Mitsubishi Research Institute, Inc. (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Takashi Morisaki; “MRI”) and BVG Associates (Head Office: UK; Managing Director: Bruce Valpy; “BVGA”) signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen collaboration in consulting services in the offshore wind area. MRI and BVGA aim to contribute to the expansion of offshore wind power, reduction of costs, and development of the industry by providing in unison high-value-added consulting services that utilize their individual strengths.

1. Background

While the global offshore wind market has been centered in Europe for over two decades, it has recently seen substantial growth in the United States and Asia. Recent policy has sparked interest in the Japanese market as the country aims to develop 10 GW by 2030 and 30 to 45 GW by 2040. Sights are also set on growing potential for new market entry and business development via the wide range of related industries; Japan aims for contributions to domestic industrial growth.

2. Outline of MoU

MRI has been on top of this growing trend from the start, providing a full set of consulting services to government agencies, industry associations, and private companies. MRI signed a memorandum of understanding with BVGA in order to add momentum to its initiatives to date. BVGA boasts extensive knowledge and achievements in strategic consulting on offshore wind in global markets including Europe, the United States, and Asia. The team-up will strengthen both parties’ services, from design and management support for offshore-wind development geared toward the public sector, to consulting for competitive bidding and market entry geared toward the private sector.

3. Future Outlook

By combining the strengths of both companies, MRI and BVGA will develop policy recommendations to ensure the expansion of offshore wind. The parties will provide high-value-added consulting services to both the public and private sectors, such as providing systems for monitoring the status of domestic industries and sharing operating data, supporting the formulation of bid content, and supporting the entry into and business expansion of offshore wind markets. Through these activities, MRI and BVGA will contribute to the expansion of offshore wind power, reduction of costs, and development of the industry in Japan.
