Tokyo (13 March 2024) — Mitsubishi Research Institute, Inc. (MRI) and ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), the association’s energy arm, commenced work on a new research project. MRI and ACE will make proposals for achieving both decarbonization and economic growth in ASEAN.
MRI and ACE have already been in collaboration, most recently on an MRI-hosted seminar in September 2023. This time, the team will analyze the impacts of carbon pricing on the ASEAN industries and will make recommendations on how ASEAN can transition to carbon neutrality while maintaining and enhancing its industrial competitiveness.
MRI and ACE aim to use the project as a springboard for their own further collaboration and as a tool for the success of both ASEAN and Japan. Findings are set to be published at the end of the project.
MRI helps governments and businesses tackle decarbonization-related challenges both within Japan and abroad. ACE is an ASEAN intergovernmental organization that represents member states’ interests in the energy sector and serves as a guide for its decarbonization transition.
MRI will leverage its experience in policymaking and business support related to decarbonization, both in Japan and internationally, as well as its expertise in quantitative analysis using energy and economic models. ACE, on the other hand, will contribute its in-depth understanding of the current situation in the ASEAN region. Together, these two organizations will harness their respective strengths to drive progress in achieving decarbonization goals in ASEAN.
Most ASEAN member countries have set goals for net zero in the medium to long term will need realistic transition strategies to achieve both decarbonization and economic growth. In September 2021, ACE published the 7th ASEAN Energy Outlook (AEO), which charts ASEAN's future energy pathway, and is currently preparing the 8th edition.
